X or Y or Z is an entirely online-sourced documentary film that collages user-generated stock footage and overlays it with experiences by multiracial people dealing with issues such as tokenism, racial imposter syndrome, and cultural appropriation. One question among others the work poses is our group membership—either self-categorised or chosen by others—considered to be more important in deciding who we are than our own agency as individuals?
Taking as its starting point the recurrent matter of who has the right to tell someone else's story and who has control over one's image, my work X or Y or Z investigates different points of view and invites you to examine your own feelings, thoughts, and experiences in relation to those of others. In these divisive times with online echo chambers, disinformation, and algorithmic biases, social awareness is more crucial than ever.
